Primary 1 had a treat of visiting the Scottish Puppet and Mask Centre in Glasgow as part of our topic learning about Toys. We were greeted at the centre by some puppet makers and puppeteers who explained a bit about the exciting things we would do during our visit: from puppet making to watching a puppet show. We also got to meet a stick puppet of a prince that was decorated in shiny gold beads and came all the way from Java.
We went to the workshop where there was lots of different recycled material for us to make our very own puppet. There were lots of different colours and textures of wool to use for the hair; many bottle tops for a nose; and lots of fabric to dress our puppets and make them unique. We all had a lovely time using our imagination to make our very own character.
After lunch, we headed to the theatre where we learnt many things about different types of puppets. We saw shadow puppets from China, Greece and Indonesia as well as some famous glove puppets like Punch and Judy and Sooty. All the puppets were fun to watch and we even saw a juggling string puppet.
It was a fun, creative and very interesting day that everyone enjoyed.
